For older condominiums and apartments, the building envelope which includes the exterior walls, windows, doors and roofs, are the largest and most expensive parts of the buildings, however, they rarely receive the attention they require. This presentation will look at identifying and assessing the typical issues with the building envelope in older multi-residential buildings and what can be done to deal with them using case studies.

After completing his engineering education at Ryerson University, Bob entered the professional field of roof consultancy, followed by other building envelope systems. For the past 25 years, Bob has been involved in the building science industry. He is a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario and a Principal at Accent Building Sciences Inc. for the last 17 years. Bob holds a certificate for “BSSO, Building Science Specialist of Ontario” from Ontario Building Envelope Counsel (OBEC), a Certified Thermographer and professional member of Roof Consulting Institute (RCI), OIRCA and CRCA. Throughout the years, Bob has been involved in comprehensive failure investigations, analysis and engineering design, project management/administration and inspection of various types of building envelope systems. His experience encompasses various types of specialty institutional buildings, such as: arenas, pools, libraries, emergency services, hospitals, long-term care, schools, correctional, art gallery; to residential and non-residential low/high-rise buildings. His career also included working on industrial factories, and mining facilities as well.
